Thread Title: BORDERLESS PRINTING
Added by Pip on 21/May/05 at 10:10:47
Can anyone please tell me how to do borderless printing in Photoshop CS? I''ve just bought a Canon i9950 printer. When I choose borderless printing from the print menu options it says that the image will be enlarged and quality deteriorated, it also crops the image slightly. Is there a better way of doing this? Any advice greatly appreciated, thanks.
Also, have got Photoshop set to RGB 1998, is this the best option or should I invest in a printer profile?

it all depends on what your printer allows, as some say in their literature borderless printing on 6" x 4" paper,.
if you rezise a photo to say 6x4 and print it using a printer that does not do borderless printinb you will have a border of some kind on the photo.
I use my local lab for all my work and when I resize to 6x4 it prints a 6x4 borderless print
hope this helps

Hi Pip - Borderless printing has got nothing to do with Photoshop (as long as the PS file is the right size and resolution) - its all down to your printer driver - so its time to get the printer manual out.
On the colour management side - Adobe 1998 is a good choice for the RGB working space but this is not the same as a printer profile. There are generic printer profiles available for most paper/ink/printer combinations - look on the net, especially printer, & paper manufacturers websites. You need to download & install a specific profile for the paper/ink/printer you use - they usually self-install or have instructions. If you have done it successfully - click print - on the subscreen go to the pull down PROFILE under PRINT SPACE and you should be able to select your new profile (It will probably currently be set to SAME AS SOURCE). Unless your profile has different instructions select INTENT>PERCETUAL for matt papers and INTENT>RELATIVE COLORiMETRIC for gloss papers. Note - you will still need to set the printer properties to the right paper size/type - its a good idea to save them under the same name as the profile then you can pick them from a menu to match the profile you are using. (especuially if you regularly use several kinds of paper each with its own profile)
You can have custom profiles made for your specific printer/ink/paper combination (all print heads are slightly different) - look at www.fotospeed.com.
If you want to sort out colour management - the first step is to make sure your monitor is calibrated - either run Adobe Gamma (the wizard has good instructions) or buy a Spyder for around £100.
Good luck

Thanks for your advice, it''s been really helpful. The printer does support borderless printing up to A3, have tried it out and it looks great. Will look into getting a profile asap. Thanks again.
