Added by dan on 06/May/06 at 22:49:51
flicking through the BJP magazine I saw tescos were looking to recruit studio staff for their ''new venture''. not knowing anything about this I wondered if anyone else had more info? if they are looking to get into the portait business that''s rather worrying!!

Not time to panic just yet! I think the key is in the phrase "Help our products look good ...", which suggests product shots rather than screwing your local, friendly and great VFM portrait snapper. Of course, when Tesco say that "Every little helps", they really mean that every last penny they can get out of you helps their massive profits!

Yes I saw this...they really do have everything covered! I just hope it doesn''t take on the shape of pixifoto (no offence anyone)

Well if Tesco are not getting into portraits then ASDA definetely are. So an ad the other week for a portrait photographer to work in ASDA. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Well, ASDA would, wouldn''t they? After all, they''re part of Walmart, who have been producing ''portraits'' for years.
It all comes down the the point I always make, and that seems to apply to just about every kind of business there is - there is business to be had at both the top and the bottom end but very little in the middle, and the bottom end is over-competetive and over saturated and simply not worth bothering with.
There is nothing new or sinister about Tesco wanting to do their own product shots, most supermarket chains already do so but they soon find that their in-house photography can''t produce everything they need and the more important work gets farmed out to professionals.

possibly a stupid comment, but surely people aren''t really dressed for a photoshoot at the supermarket? (well they''re not at mine)& if they dress up specially, they''re going to feel a bit daft traipsing past the shellsuits in their best clothes. I can''t see the 2 going together really. Does it work in America?

I wouldn''t have paired insurance with tescos but they do it. unfortunatly the many tens of thousands of people that pass through tescos and asdas doors each day, anything they put in front of their customers is going to be seen by far more people then us independants will ever reach. if they are going to enter the portrai market its a very big worry for me and many other portrait togs.

My local Asda opened a portrait studio about six months ago, and they constantly have special offers, i.e. spend £30 on groceries and get a free 10"x 8" portrait, But in true Asda (Wallmart) fashion, the latest offer made me laugh, buy one 20"x 16" for only £49.99 and get one free.

I''m curious to know where they are setting up. Everyone wants in on the act. Speilmans are activly promoting their new portrait business.(sat in the window with everyone gawping)
The problem is that we cannot compete for the printing prices.

I thought Tesco were looking for product photographers, rather than portraits.
If taking photographs of tins of beans and dog food is your thing, the applications are on the BIP website.

The word "venture" worries me. If they are offering a "Venture" studio within a supermarket, it will clash with us togs. They can afford a marketing budget which is higher than my turnover. However, on the plus side (ours) have you seen what they charge for their portraits?!!!

Regarding venture: There are some rumours going around about them that have arisen over the last 24 hours. Positive news for some people, negative news for them?

I did a session for a dog ownwer the other day, they bought a large canvas (probibly the same price as the pedigree dog was).
Buyers are what''s needed the more the merrier.

You really should say !!
I had an interview with venture with the manager and head photographer. I could see the photographer really did not want me to get the job as I was answering all questions he could fire at me. Never got the job because the manager said I never had enough experience (which he new was untrue) when I queried this he changed his reason to did not know enough about venture. Strange I thought the job was for a photographer not a know all. So if you get an interview for venture, act dumb about photography and make sure you know everything about the company and you are sorted.

Anyone else think that buyers/customers are on the endangered species, or is it just (as 10CC said;" "A silly phase I''m going through?"
