We had the same problem, and we fixed it! First, identify that it''s the AF motor drive by A) Turning it on and putting your ears against the camera, then hearing a humming noise for about 5 seconds. B) The error comes up flashing on the screen: "E:61:00". Okay, so you''ve identified your problem! Next you wanna fix it, right? ;) A) Put the camera about a half inch from a hard surface. B) Let the lense go out and hit the surface and retract a little bit. Let it go out all the way when it tries the next time. If that doesnt fix it, try this: A) Turn it on and let the lense go out fully B) See where the lense comes out of the camera? The little round crack that surrounds it? Wiggle the lense a bit and blow in there a bit. (Be sure not to blow on the lense!) Now turn it off/on again, and it should be fixed! If not, try these steps a few more times. If still nothing, then I suggest phoning Sony, but this DID work for us, so hopefully it''ll work for you :)

Thanks this is the best bit of advice that i have found on the net so far. I bet that if i had gone to a sony shop they would have walked into another room and given it a bang then charged me a few hundred for the repair job. Once again thanks

I tried this technique with a Sony camcorder, where the lens moves about internally. As long as you move the lens (with the W/T button) while you lightly bang it on the table, this works! Awesome. Thanks.

I love a hi-tech solution! Had this issue today on a MCV-FD92. Whacking while zooming fixed it. Oh, that all tech issues could solved with a good whack!

my lens is inside the camera. your method of having the thing hit the hard surface doesn''t work b/c it''s actually inside my camera. what do i do?

The first method (from www.fewin.com I think) work well for my DSC_P72, but at the third try only. Happily, as I prefer this kind of "push" to the the "whack thing" !?! Tanks to the great brain :)

Could someone please tell me how to do the method of "bang and blow". My DSC-P1 have this error too. I already tried method "not the lens fully open (let open in second time)three times and the error is still. Thank you in advance.

You folks are great! I am stationed in Iraq, taking pictures with no hope of any Sony service and my DSC-W1 locked upwith the error code E:61:00 flashing. Bumping, blowing didn''t work--until about the 25th time--then poof! It works again! Thanks!

Firstly, Thank you Phil for sharing your expereince in dealing with the SONY DSC E:61:00 problem. Thanks to all for contributing to this forum too!. I''ve had my SONY DSC W5 for 72 days and have been using it on a regular basis. I did try a similar method and it worked! I''d like to point out the fact that in this case, the camera lens got stuck in the extended position and wouldn''t retract. At first, I tried the ''bang and blow'' exercise several times, but in vain. Then, facing the camera towards the flat of a table, I turned off the camera and turned it on again but this time on hearing the motor whine, the camera and hence the lens barrel was gently pushed inwards against the surface of the table (without touching the lens). After completly pushing it in gently, the camera was turned off and then on. And presto, it worked! In short, you can assist the lens to retract in wards by applying a bit of pressure.I''m not sure if this is the best thing to do, though. But its working just fine! Antony

I have a P200 and after trying to find my proof of purchase from my parents for 3 months I had a look on the internet. I found that just hitting behind the lens while turning it on or off works excellently. I managed to make it work 1st time. Now I''m so annoyed I hadn''t tried it before Christmas!

Brilliant! Not sure if it will last but it works. I have a DSC-W1 and was getting the error, plus the lens wouldn''t retract properly and I was having to gently force it back in. Doing this forcing fixed it temporarily once but then it went wrong again and I took it to a Sony dealer. Got quoted £210!!! to change the lens system or something. Got it back and did your trick instead. Works so far!! I will tell them. Thanks for the tip

hey all I own a dsc-w7 and was also experiencing the same problem with the lens not retracting properly (receiving the "Turn Power On And Off Again" message). A combination of both suggestions seemed to fix mine beautifully. By progressively placing pressure upon the lens, I finally managed to close it entirely. It then only semi-opened once more, with the lens covers almost fully back. I flicked them closed manually with the non-ink side of a pen (being careful not to touch the lens), and then forced it to retract once more. I then gave it ONE solid(ish) whack, pressed Power On, and presto, problem fixed. Thank you all so much for giving me the confidence to abuse my camera. I think sometimes technology just needs a persuasive, yet gentle slap every now and then to remind it who''s (currrently) in charge. fiDJit

The ''bang and blow'' techniques are the way to go. I found you can be quite firm with pushing in the lens mechanism. Don''t give up straight away - it took me about 30 minutes.

Brilliant. I tried the blowing technique. No luck. After a frustrating 30mins, I gave it a few whack while turning it on and off, and it worked! This technique works with TV''s too. Ha ha. Thanks for the advice.

Well, I did the whack and blow method on my DSC-T9, and it worked perfectly (eventually). Is it alright that zooming and focusing are really noisy right now?

DSC-P50 with the same error/auto-focus problem. Used it as an excuse to buy a DSC-H1 on close out ($249). THEN, while reading the instructions (some of us do that), it occured to me that I''d never "whacked". Two firm smacks against my palm and my kids gain a good camera.
